India’s National Blockchain Project: What it is, aims and objectives

The Indian government has a long running program of offering e-governance services at various levels to offer public services. While Indian states have begun adopting blockchain technologies in areas such as property records, there is also the ambitious National Blockchain Project, which aims to develop these e-governance technologies using blockchain as a public and transparent ledger.

The National Blockchain Project is funded by the National Security Council, which was set up in 1998. The execution group is the IIT Kanpur incubated CRUBUN. Among its other collaborators are IIT Madras, and Governments of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

The project’s listed blockchain platforms are Hyperledger Fabric, Ethereum, Corda, Tendermint, Quorum, and BigChain DB. Its current research areas are healthcare and land records, and a work in progress project for developing analytic tools to detect malicious activities in blockchain transactions.

CRUBUN, co-founded by IIT graduates Mukul Verma, Ras Dwivedi, Tanmay Yadav, aims to develop solutions for e-governance, and among its focus areas are identity management with digital certificates, property registration and land records, e-Procurement, and supply chain management. For instance, its Self-sovereign identity (SSI) project offers a decentralized digital identity that allows users of the internet to own and control their data and information.

The National Blockchain Project is set to unfold in there phases: feasibility study and report, research and development, and implementation and incubation. The R&D phase will conclude with a demo application that will be built over the prototype of the platform. The incubation phase will involve a technology team to be built for produce and deploy solutions and collaborate with government entities for demonstration of the final platform.
