Whatsapp introduces crypto payments pilot in the United States

Whatsapp has introduced a new pilot that allows a ‘limited count’ of individuals in the United States to receive and send money from within a chat using crypto. The feature is powered by Meta’s digital wallet named Novi that introduced as a pilot 6 weeks ago. Also, the payments will be made using Pax Dollars (USDP), a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar issued by Paxos. The news was made official by Whatsapp’s Will Cathcart and Novi’s upcoming head Stephane Kasriel.

As per Novi’s official website, sending payment is akin to sending any other attachment on Whatsapp. The feature can be accessed through the + icon on iOS or the paper clip icon on Android and then select ‘Payment’ from the menu that pops up. The website of Novi mentions that there are no limits on how often the payment can be sent, no fees for receiving or sending money, and no fees to withdraw money or keep a balance in your Novi account. Furthermore, the payments are transferred instantly.

The Novi pilot was initially intended to be available in the US and Guatemala. But WABetaInfo mentions that users in Guatemala won’t be able to access the latest feature. Rather, they will have to resume using the standalone Novi app.
